General Information
Event Description
Thinking of graduate school? Come learn pathways, tips and tricks!
Graduate study can feel overwhelming! There's honours, coursework masters, research masters, PhDs, scholarships, supervisors, and international options, all with different expectations and outcomes (pheww). It’s hard to know what suits your goals, or even what questions to ask. This event from the Emerging Scientists Network aims to cut through the noise, demystify the process, and provide honest, real-world insights so you can make confident, informed decisions.
ABOUT:
Join us for a panel discussion offering early career scientists at any level the chance to explore diverse post-graduate pathways, clarify the nuances of graduate study, and hear honest perspectives from scientists who are currently navigating this landscape themselves.
Each speaker will give a short, personal talk about their journey: what they studied, what worked (and what didn’t), and how they’re continuing to grow their careers today. Following on will be a guided panel discussion and Q&A. Then informal networking for you to ask questions, make connections, and gather real-world advice.
SPEAKERS:
- Aaron Heap, PhD candidate, University of Melbourne, School of Forest and Ecosystem Sciences.
- Dr. Sophie Crouch, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Monash University, Quantum chemist and science communicator.
- Dave Rubuite, Climate justice, education, and sustainable technology consultant, Masters of Environment, University of Melbourne.
- Madeleine Kelly, Masters student, University of Melbourne, Environment and Climate Change, background in arts (BA).
This event is about more than just getting a degree - it’s about your mindset. We want you to walk away knowing your study options, the pros and cons of graduate studies and how to not just survive but thrive in your research field. It's all about easing career anxiety, reducing analysis paralysis, and learning the value of post-graduate studies.
Food & Drinks provided.
